William Edgar Marshall (1837 - 1906)
was a painter and engraver who was born in New York City and began his artistic career as an engraver of decorative pocket watches. During the Civil War Marshall studied in France under Thomas Couture and returned to the United States in 1865. His precise technique and astute aesthetic eye made him one of the best loved American engravers of his time. His studies of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington are considered iconic portraits.
Marshall based his engraving of Washington on the famous portrait by Gilbert Stuart known as the "Athenaeum likeness”, hence named because it was owned by the Boston Athenaeum. The "Athenaeum likeness” became one of the best known representations of Washington and has greatly influenced later generations of American printmakers and painters.
